Zinc and copper share a way into the body. When zinc intake runs high, cells lining the gut make more metallothionein, a protein that binds copper and keeps it from reaching the bloodstream. A 2024 review of zinc toxicity in Molecules describes the chain directly: elevated zinc induces metallothioneins, which bind copper, resulting in copper deficiency. The NHS guidance on zinc puts it in one line for patients: taking high doses reduces the amount of copper the body can absorb.
Your blood count is where a copper problem surfaces. Copper and ceruloplasmin, the protein that carries it, are not part of a routine panel. The complete blood count is. A Mayo Clinic review of 40 patients with copper deficiency found anemia and neutropenia were the most common blood abnormalities, and most patients also had neurological findings. Zinc was not the leading cause in that series: 25% had had bariatric surgery and another 35% other stomach or bowel surgery. Supplements are one route to the same result, and the only one a reader can switch off.
It can pass for a bone marrow cancer. A 2025 case report in Cureus describes a 68-year-old man admitted with weakness, breathlessness and dizziness. His white cell count was 0.87 × 10³/µL against a normal range of 4.0 to 11.0, and his hemoglobin was 8.6 g/dL. A bone marrow biopsy showed ring sideroblasts, and he went home with a presumed diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome. At follow-up his doctors found he had been taking zinc supplements for immune support and using a zinc-containing denture adhesive. His copper came back at 10 µg/dL against a normal range of 70 to 140. After he stopped zinc and started copper, his neutropenia resolved within three weeks. Mayo Clinic doctors reported the same mimicry in 2005, noting the blood picture can resemble sideroblastic anemia or myelodysplastic syndrome.
A normal zinc result does not rule it out. A case report in Federal Practitioner published September 1, 2026 describes a 73-year-old veteran with progressive nerve symptoms, a low white cell count and anemia after a prolonged course of over-the-counter zinc started following a COVID-19 infection. His copper and ceruloplasmin were low. His zinc level was normal, which the authors put down to him having stopped the supplement shortly before testing. This is a single case report, so it shows what can happen, not how often. The practical point stands: a clean zinc number taken after someone has quit tells you little about the months before.
The blood count recovers fast. The nerves may not. In a 2006 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review of copper deficiency myelopathy, Dr. Neeraj Kumar wrote that copper supplementation resolves the anemia and neutropenia promptly and completely and may prevent further neurological decline, but that improvement in nerve symptoms, when it happens, is often subjective and mostly sensory. That gap is the case for taking an unexplained low white count seriously early. By the time numbness or an unsteady walk appears, some of the damage may be permanent.
Where the limits sit. The NHS advises no more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor says otherwise, and adult needs are about 9.5 mg a day for men and 7 mg for women. The European Food Safety Authority sets its upper limit at the same 25 mg, per the Molecules review. The US limit is 40 mg a day from food and supplements combined, per the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. Denture adhesives are an easy source to miss: the Molecules review notes some creams contain up to 34 mg of zinc per gram.
What to do with your own results. If a blood count shows a low white cell or neutrophil count, or anemia without an obvious cause, and you have taken zinc for months (lozenges, immune blends, a multivitamin stacked on a separate zinc tablet, or zinc denture cream), tell your doctor about all of it. Ask whether serum copper and ceruloplasmin are worth checking before a wider workup. If zinc was prescribed, for Wilson disease for example, speak to the prescriber before changing the dose.
