What does the AST:ALT ratio tell you?

Ferritin doesn't distinguish which scenario you're in nearly as well as the relationship between your two liver enzymes does. This one ratio is the fastest way to separate alcohol from the other three causes.

ALT and AST are both released when liver cells are damaged, but they come from different sources inside the cell and respond differently to different kinds of injury. In fatty liver disease and most other chronic liver stress, ALT typically runs higher than AST.
