Apheresis is already a cholesterol treatment. Blood leaves one arm, runs through a filter that pulls out LDL and other plasma components, and the cellular part returns through the other arm. Doctors reach for it when diet and statins don't move stubborn cholesterol.
The Dresden team found a second effect they weren't testing for. Researchers at the Technical University of Dresden measured PFAS levels before and after sessions and found reductions of up to 25%, alongside early signs of change in measurable plastic particles. Published August 4 in Brain Health.
Nobody knows why cholesterol filtering pulls out PFAS too. PFAS compounds bind to proteins and lipids in blood plasma, which may be why a filter built for cholesterol catches them as a side effect. The researchers reported the finding without claiming a mechanism.
What the session removes isn't the same as what's stored in your body. PFAS accumulates in fat, liver, and bone as well as blood. Clearing plasma during a session says nothing about how fast tissue-stored PFAS moves back into circulation afterward, and the study doesn't answer that.
This isn't a PFAS treatment yet. Apheresis carries its own risks and stays reserved for cholesterol that medication can't control. The researchers were direct that a lab reduction hasn't been linked to any health outcome, and that total-body PFAS burden is a separate, unmeasured question.
