A sugar craving two or three hours after a carbohydrate-heavy meal follows a predictable mechanism. Blood glucose rises, insulin responds, and in someone with early insulin resistance that response can overshoot, pulling glucose down faster than it should. The drop reads as a mild emergency to the brain, and the fastest fix is more sugar. That's the craving.
Standard bloodwork checks fasting glucose, which is a decent screen but misses the swing itself, since it only captures one static number. HbA1c adds the 3-month average, useful for catching a trend fasting glucose alone would miss. Triglycerides track with how much carbohydrate the body is processing and rise early in insulin resistance, often before glucose does. Magnesium and hs-CRP are second-line: magnesium supports insulin signalling, though the evidence here is observational rather than guideline-backed, and hs-CRP flags the low-grade inflammation that tends to accompany insulin resistance.
None of this means every craving is metabolic. But if the pattern is regular, an afternoon crash, a need for something sweet, a headache or shakiness before the next meal, these five markers are the ones worth checking before assuming it's just a habit.
